Make Room for Something You Love

The Practice

Instead of changing something about your life, try making room for something.

Think of something you already know you enjoy.

Something that makes you feel a little more alive, settled, curious, playful, creative, or simply like yourself.

Maybe it's reading.

Drawing.

Gardening.

Playing music.

Sitting outside.

Stretching.

Cooking something you love.

Working on a personal project.

Calling someone you enjoy talking to.

Taking the long way home with the windows down.

It doesn't have to be meaningful or productive.

Choose one thing and give it ten minutes.

Not just when you happen to have time — actually make a little room for it in your day.

Then do it again another day if you can.

For a little while, see what happens when something you value is given an actual place in your life rather than waiting somewhere at the edges of it.

You don't need to decide whether it should become part of your routine, and you don't need to make yourself enjoy it simply because you thought you would.

Just give it some space and live with the experience.

Reflect on What Happened

The Reflection

After you've had some time to experiment, find a quiet moment and something to write with.

Think back over your experience.

Did you actually make the time? And if you did, what happened when you gave those ten minutes to something you enjoy?

Did you look forward to it? Did you feel different afterward? Did it change anything about the rest of your day?

Maybe ten minutes felt surprisingly generous.

Maybe it wasn't enough.

Maybe something you thought you missed didn't feel the way you remembered it.

Maybe you discovered that even ten minutes was difficult to make room for.

If you didn't do it as often as you intended, notice that too — without turning it into a failure.

What got in the way? Was there genuinely no room? Did something else need your attention more? Did you forget, or keep telling yourself you'd do it later?

Or did making time for something simply because you enjoy it feel strangely uncomfortable?

Write about what actually happened.

Then consider:

Did this add something to my life that I want more of?

Does it need more space, less space, or a different kind of space?

Do I want to carry it forward?

You don't have to reclaim every part of yourself you've ever loved.

Sometimes we return to something and discover that it belonged to another season.

And sometimes we discover that something very small has been waiting patiently for a little room.

Integration isn't only about what we change or release. It's also about what we choose to make space for.

Keep what brought something meaningful to your life. Adjust what almost worked. Let go of what didn't.

And carry forward what you want to keep.
