Try a Different Response

The Practice

Pay attention to one reaction that tends to happen automatically.

Maybe you get defensive when you feel criticized.

You say yes before you've had time to decide.

You become impatient when someone interrupts you.

You reach for your phone the moment you feel bored or uncomfortable.

You rush when something feels urgent, even when it really isn't.

Choose something familiar, but not overwhelming.

Then, when you notice it happening, try something slightly different.

Take one breath before you answer.

Say "let me think about that."

Wait before sending the message.

Ask a question instead of making an assumption.

Step away for a few minutes before continuing the conversation.

You don't have to respond perfectly, and you may not even catch the reaction until after it happens.

That's okay.

The point is simply to give yourself an opportunity to choose instead of automatically following the same familiar path.

Try it whenever the opportunity arises.

Don't worry about analyzing it right away.

Just live with the experiment for a little while and see what happens.

Reflect on What Happened

The Reflection

After you've had a few opportunities to experiment, find a quiet moment and something to write with.

Think back over your experiences.

Were there moments when you noticed the familiar reaction happening?

Did you catch it before you responded, while it was happening, or only afterward?

What did you try differently — and what happened?

Maybe taking a breath changed the direction of a conversation.

Maybe waiting before responding gave you time to realize what you actually wanted to say.

Maybe the new response felt uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

Maybe you forgot entirely until hours later.

Maybe you tried something different and discovered it didn't work for you at all.

Write about what actually happened rather than what you think should have happened.

Then consider:

Did responding differently change the situation?

Did it change how you felt during or afterward?

Did the response feel more like you, or simply different from what you normally do?

Is there anything you would try again or adjust next time?

Integration isn't about finding the perfect response.

It's trying something different, living with the experience, and letting what you learn inform the next choice.

Keep what helped. Change what didn't.

And then take that information back into your life.
